International Reconciliation Initiatives
Activity: These programmes and initiatives support people’s efforts in nation-building, peace-making and reconciliation, particularly in situations of tension or open conflict, or as part of a struggle to rebuild countries and communities after a period of conflict. The IofC United Nations Office in Geneva facilitates interactions with the UN community, especially in the areas of conflict prevention and reconciliation.

Where: the action takes place all round the world, wherever nations or communities are divided and someone takes an initiative in the spirit of IofC.

Countries & regions where significant programmes are under way include: Somalia, Sudan, Sierra Leone, Kenya, Rwanda, Congo, Burundi, South Africa, Solomon Islands, Papua New Guinea, Cambodia, Israel/Palestine and Lebanon.

Each August representatives of these various initiatives meet at the Agenda for Reconciliation conferences at Caux, Switzerland – to learn from each other, share experiences and ideas and encourage each other. Aspects of these initiatives are coordinated and monitored from IofC’s offices in Boston (USA), Geneva and Luzern (Switzerland), Paris (France) and London (UK).

Who (in UK terms): There are three UK based full-time volunteers who work on this programme, and one consultant engaged for (typically) 2 days a week. Many other IofC full-time workers and participants in the IofC movement also make vital contributions to these initiatives.

Contact person in the UK: Peter Riddell 01865-511800.

Hope in the Cities
Black and white Selmians walk together
Activity: Healing within and between divided or disempowered communities requires a network of people who are willing to change the way they relate to each other and to model new relationships built on mutual acceptance, trust and genuine concern for others. During the last 10 years, UK Hope in the Cities has focussed on developing and supporting such networks between the representatives of different faith communities, the civic groups, local police and the business people living and working in the inner cities of Britain.

Activities of these initiatives include local and international conferences, facilitated dialogues for ‘honest conversation’ and courses to train facilitators.

Where: Initiatives supported by the Hope in the Cities programme are taking place in cities such as: Liverpool, Nottingham, London, Newcastle, Huddersfield, Manchester, Sheffield, Derby & Birmingham all feature. Various aspects of this programme are coordinated and monitored by staff at the IofC London office.

Who (in UK): There are two UK full-time volunteers who work on this programme alongside them two part-time consultants devote their time on a weekly basis to assist the full-time workers. Many IofC volunteers participate in the wider Hope in the Cities team offering their time and skills in running events and living out the principles of this programme in their local communities.

Action for Life (AfL) is a nine-month training and outreach program of Initiatives of Change, bringing together an intergenerational, international, multi-faith team of 30-45 people. Participants learn from and work with individuals and organisations who are bringing change in India and other parts of Asia.

The third AfL programme begins at Asia Plateau, Panchgani, India, in November 2005, and runs to August 2006.

Although this is an international program, Initiatives of Change UK is one of the facilitating bodies for collecting the funds for the AfL programme. All financial contributions to AfL via this website will go towards this programme, with none being retained by Initiatives of Change – UK.
